Abstract:
International audience ; L’objectif de la recherche est de montrer que l’importance de l’échec scolaire identifié dans la collectivité de Saint-Martin (Antilles françaises) est liée à la non maîtrise de la langue française. L’anglais est historiquement et culturellement la langue véhiculaire de la Collectivité de Saint-Martin. Cette langue est majoritairement employée dans la vie quotidienne, toutefois, le français reste la langue officielle. Dès l’entrée en école maternelle, la communication en français devient obligatoire. L’échec scolaire serait donc lié à la cette situation particulière. C’est pourquoi l’apprentissage du français langue seconde semblerait plus pertinent, et un enseignement bilingue pourrait être une alternative. Le cadre théorique est constitué des travaux de Vygotski sur le développement de la langue maternelle et l’apprentissage d’une langue étrangère ; de ceux de Delory-Momberger sur la socialisation de l’enfant comme constituant de son identité au travers de ses relations avec l’autre dans sa famille comme dans l’école ; ainsi que des recherches de Bautier à propos de la famille comme lieu d’élaboration des premiers balbutiements vers le langage. Les ATSEM sont en règle générale originaires de l’île et donc anglophones, elles s’expriment aussi en créole et pour certaines, en espagnol. La grande majorité des enseignants étant essentiellement francophones, ces ATSEM cumulent de manière informelle d’autres fonctions qui ne font pas partie de leurs missions. A Saint-Martin, plus qu’ailleurs ce travailler ensemble semble incontournable. La méthodologie s’appuie sur des observations centrées sur les écoles maternelles, lieux où enseignants francophones et ATSEM anglophones participent à l’éducation des élèves. Des questionnaires, des interviews ainsi que l’analyse de rapports et de résultats scolaires ont permis ce travail de recherche. Nos conclusions tendent vers un enseignement bilingue en cohérence avec l’environnement historique, culturel et politique de la Collectivité. ; The objective of the research is to show that the importance of the school failure identified with the collectivity of Saint-Martin (French Antilles) is linked to the lack of the French language proficiency. English is historically and culturally the vehicular language of the collectivity of Saint-Martin. It is mostly used in everyday life; however, French remains the official language. From pre-school, communicating in French becomes mandatory. Failure in school could therefore be linked to this particular situation. Hence why, the learning of French as a secondary language would be more pertinent, and a bilingual teaching system could be an alternative. The theoretical framework comprises of Vygotsky’s work on development of the mother tongue and the learning of a foreign languages; Delory-Momberger's work on socialization of the child as constituent of his identity through his relationships within is family as with school; and Bautier's research about family as the foundation of the first tentative steps towards language. ATSEMs are generally from the island thus are English speakers and also express themselves in creole and for others in Spanish. The big majority of teachers being essentially francophone, these ATSEM take on in an informal way other functions not part of their missions. In Saint-Martin, more than anywhere else, working together seems unavoidable. The method is based on observations centered on pre-schools, where French speaking teachers and English speaking ATSEM participate on pupils' education. Surveys, interviews along with reports analysis and school results enabled this research. Our conclusions tend towards a bilingual teaching, coherent with the historical, cultural and political environment of the Collectivity.
